Biotin for Horses: The Complete Guide to Stronger Hooves

What biotin does, which horses need it, how much to feed, and how long it really takes to see stronger hooves. A practical guide for horse owners in Pakistan.

What is biotin?

Biotin is a B-vitamin (vitamin B7, sometimes called vitamin H). Horses need it to make keratin, the tough protein that forms the hoof wall, sole, frog, coat, mane and tail. Bacteria in a horse's hindgut make some biotin, and some comes from fresh grass. But for many horses, especially those on dry fodder, in hot climates, or with naturally poor feet, that is not enough to grow strong hoof horn.

How biotin helps hooves

New hoof wall is produced at the coronet band, at the top of the hoof, and slowly grows down to the ground. Biotin supports the cells there that build keratin and hold the hoof's layers firmly together. Controlled studies in horses have found that daily biotin supplements can improve the hardness and quality of new hoof horn in horses with weak, crumbly feet. The key word is new: biotin cannot repair a crack that already exists. It helps the hoof that grows in next.

Signs your horse may benefit from biotin

  • Brittle, dry or chipped hoof walls
  • Sand cracks or cracks that return after trimming
  • Shoes that come loose or nail holes that crumble
  • Thin, flaky soles and slow hoof growth
  • A dull coat and a brittle, slow-growing mane and tail
Hoof problems can also come from infection, laminitis or injury. If your horse is lame or the hoof is hot, call your vet first.

How much biotin does a horse need?

Most hoof studies used around 15 to 20 mg of biotin per day for an average adult horse of about 500 kg. Lighter horses and ponies usually need less, and some large or hard-working horses are given more. Always follow the dose on your supplement's label, because products differ in strength. Biotin is water-soluble, so any extra is passed out in urine, and it is considered very safe at normal feeding levels.

How long until you see results?

This is where most owners give up too early. A hoof grows roughly 6 to 10 mm a month, so it takes 9 to 12 months to grow a completely new hoof wall from coronet to toe. Here is a realistic timeline with daily feeding:

  • Weeks 4 to 8: coat often looks shinier
  • Months 2 to 3: a band of smoother, stronger horn appears at the top of the hoof
  • Months 6 to 9: the better horn reaches the nail area, so shoes hold better
  • Months 9 to 12: a full new hoof wall
If you stop feeding biotin, new growth can go back to its old quality. Many owners keep it in the daily feed long term.

Biotin works best with good basic care

Biotin is one part of healthy feet, not a cure-all. For the best results:

  • Feed a balanced diet with enough protein, zinc and copper
  • Keep a regular farrier schedule, usually every 6 to 8 weeks
  • Avoid constant switching between very wet and very dry ground, which weakens the hoof wall
  • Pick out hooves daily and check for heat, smell or cracks

Hoof care tips for Pakistani conditions

Long hot, dry seasons pull moisture from hooves and make them brittle, while the monsoon brings mud and soft feet that lose shoes. Hard, stony tracks and sandy polo grounds add wear. Start biotin before the hardest season so stronger horn is already growing in, keep stable floors clean and dry, and ask your farrier about shoeing intervals for your horse's workload.

Biotin for horses: common questions

Can biotin fix a cracked hoof?

No supplement can repair existing cracks. Biotin supports stronger new horn, and the cracked area grows out and is trimmed away over time. Deep cracks need a farrier or vet.

Is biotin safe for horses?

Yes. Biotin is water-soluble and considered very safe at normal feeding levels. Follow your product's label, and ask your vet about pregnant mares, foals or horses under treatment.

Should I feed biotin all year?

Because hooves grow slowly and benefits fade when you stop, most owners with problem feet feed it every day, all year.

Does biotin help a horse's coat?

Hair is made of keratin too, so many owners notice a shinier coat and stronger mane and tail, often before hoof changes show.
